The Queen is Dead. Long Live The King!

By Ignacio De Noble

All good things must come to an end. It’s also true that all bad things must come to an end. Or more generally…

All things must come to an end

Most humans alive today have lived in her time. We were born with her as Queen and some saw the end of their days with her as a sovereign of a once mighty empire.

There is controversy raging about whether she was good or bad. Whether she added or removed to or from the lives of the people she encountered.

But the question that matters most is this.

Does it matter?

Does it?

Other than being born, which she really had nothing to do with, what exactly has she done to deserve this much attention?

Good or bad what is the point of the monarchy today?

A vestigial remnant from our dynastic past that serves to do — what exactly?

An disney-fied nod to our collective irreverence?

The question “does it matter?” begs us to wonder by we spend enormous amounts of real tangible energy and resources on things that don’t matter.

Why do we commit so much to things things that exist simply because they existed yesterday. Ideas whose birthright is simply founded on momentum. And in the case of the Royals, sustained by controversy.

What benefit does the Royal family offer other than a bastion of villainous histories and absent accountabilities?

The answer to this simple question is surprisingly complicated. And delves deep into the the metaphysical nature of what it means to be human.

The answer is also personal. But if we aren’t asking the question in the first place then what other momentum from the past is carrying us forward and where will it take us?
